Book Launch Recap: Carry the Flame Ignites Inspiration in Toronto

By: MarchFifteen

Last week in Toronto, nearly 100 guests gathered to celebrate the launch of Carry the Flame, a powerful new book that honors the spirit, stories, and legacy of Outward Bound Canada (OBC). The event brought together a vibrant cross-section of the OBC community, from current and former instructors, staff, and Board members, to alumni and long-time supporters — spanning the organization’s rich history since its inception.

As a recent past long-standing member of the Board of Directors and an OBC alumnus, I felt incredibly proud to be among this remarkable gathering. The energy in the room reflected the deep connection so many of us have to the Outward Bound mission — and to one another.

Throughout the evening, contributors to the book took the stage to read excerpts from their essays. Their words were heartfelt and moving, underscoring the enduring power of Outward Bound’s approach to education: one rooted in challenge, reflection, and growth through connection with nature.

Each story reinforced what so many of us already know — that OBC’s impact runs deep, shaping lives in ways that extend far beyond a single expedition. Carry the Flame stands as a living testament to those experiences, and to the community that has built and sustained this organization across generations.

The launch was more than a celebration of a book — it was a celebration of a shared journey. And I couldn’t be more honored to continue carrying that flame forward.
